Polio?

The polio virus, a viral illness that may affect the nervous system and result in muscular weakness, primarily enters the body via the mouth, commonly through hands that have come into contact with the feces of an infected person. Saliva may also be used as a means of oral-to-oral and respiratory transfer. Because the polio virus is highly infectious, healthy people may transmit it. It may take up to 30 days for symptoms, which might include moderate flu-like symptoms, including tiredness, fever, headaches, stiffness, and muscular soreness. During this period, an infected person may spread the virus to others. Even though it’s uncommon, polio may cause paralysis or even death.

The state is working with New York City and Rockland County to investigate, take precautions, and encourage vaccination. State and county health officials warn physicians to check for new cases. The CDC recommends polio immunization for youngsters, so those who’ve received it are at a lower risk. Rockland County’s health commissioner said the agency is “working with local health care partners and community leaders to inform the public and make polio vaccine available.”

According to what is known about this case and polio in general, Dr. Mary T. Bassett, state health commissioner, said: “The Department of Health strongly urges that unvaccinated persons be vaccinated or boosted with the FDA-approved IPV polio vaccine as soon as feasible.

The polio vaccine has been a cornerstone of the necessary, regular childhood vaccinations advised by health experts and public health organizations throughout the country because it is safe and effective in guarding against this potentially crippling illness.
